Loving What You Do and Doing What You Love

Samah Adel Al Jaryan
It is only when we love what we do and do what we love that we are capable of applying our naturally acquired tools correctly and being our best selves, both personally and professionally.

Do you ever find yourself at a crossroads, where you would rather complete a certain task over another?

Do you ever find yourself growing passionate about a specific field of work, where you will happily do anything assigned to you, while being less enthusiastic about other tasks?

Do you ever find some of your tasks tiring, or even power-consuming?

Truth is, human beings have different interests and desires, where their work often reflects their passion and aspirations. Some deem their job as their favorite pass-time, rather than just being a source of income, while others consider that their work is where they belong. Others may be on a constant job seeking quest, they are always looking for the job that suits them the most, the position that is the most aligned with their potential and areas of interest. Hence, you would always find them running in a never-ending circle, looking for their passion.

In the world of business, not all roles are available to everyone. In fact, word has it: “Carry on doing (good) deeds, for everybody will find easy to do such deeds as will lead him to his destined place for which he has been created.” In other words, our destinies, as humans, differ from one another.

There are those who are always trying to reach for the stars, while others never go beyond the tasks assigned to them. There are those who work simply for the sake of working, where their outcome would not only be lifeless, but would merely reflect a series of simple efforts, while others could never have enough: They are always in the hunt for victory, achieving one success after the other…

In his book, The 6 Types of Working Genius, Patrick Lencioni lists six tools people opt for in their quest toward finding the type of work that is the most suitable for them, the one they are the most passionate about. People are always attempting to find a job that is suitable for their potential, capabilities, and desires: a job that would lead them to achieve excellence and success. What are these 6 types of working genius then?

  1. Wonder: You see potential in yourself, so you apply the tool of wondering in your constant quest towards the correct answer.
  2. – Invention: You see ideas generated in your mind, so you apply the tool of invention in your constant quest toward identifying new solutions and coming up with creative ideas.
  3. Discernment: You see potential to assess ideas or situation, so you apply the tool of discernment to offer advice where and when needed.
  4. Galvanizing: You see potential of leading people, so you apply the tool of galvanizing to rally, motivate, and empower others to act on ideas.
  5. Enablement: You see potential in others, so you apply the tool of empowerment to support others unconditionally and enable them to bring ideas to life.
  6. Tenacity: You are not afraid to fail, nor being disappointed, so you apply the tool of tenacity to push ideas to completion.

However, not all people share the same tool, and not all people enjoy all of them. And this difference is what makes us unique, each in our own way. It is what makes us passionate about a certain job rather than another.

For you to excel at your job, to succeed at what you are doing, to grow more passionate about it, and to achieve a certain impact, look for a job that fills your cup. Look for a job that suits you, that is adequate for your skills, potential, and energy. Look for a job that incites you to give more, to develop your skills, and to ensure your personal and professional growth. Look for a job you would do with love and passion, one that makes you feel the best about yourself with every goal you achieve, one that empowers you to reach your ambitions. Look for a job that would turn you into a role model and that would always fuel you with happiness, passion, and zeal.

As the Chinese proverb has it, “It goes ill in the house where the hen sings, and the cock is silent.”
