Leadership: An Art and a Skill

Turki Al Shathri
Leadership skills are an essential art to collectively empower leaders to guide their teams toward success across diverse domains, fostering an environment of collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication that drives innovation and achieves goals even in the face of challenges and rapid change.

Leadership stands as a necessity, an acquired skill, and an artistic endeavor. In mingling with others, it's possible to discern improvements or declines in their performance, a facet that's both plausible and commonplace. This assessment, however, doesn't constitute a final judgment. For those occupying leadership roles, proactive engagement becomes paramount. While some may opt to defer critical assessments or guidance, labeling it variously according to their stance, this approach can inadvertently exacerbate circumstances. Such tendencies can eventually lead to situations where leaders, fathers, or husbands find themselves compelled to vocalize their discontent, perhaps in a burst of frustration. Conversely, those attributing blame may resort to adopting defensive mechanisms, making matters personal to an unhealthy extent. Such actions infringe upon the personal boundaries of others, particularly in our age where heightened sensitivity and need for privacy prevail. A collective societal yearning for kindness from every passerby underscores the significance of individual interactions. The antidote to these challenges lies in the systematic arrangement of encouragement, guidance, and constructive criticism, each finely timed to optimize their impact while ensuring authenticity and genuine regard for the rather you do so for multiple goals:

This includes your aspiration to develop the skills your employees and genuinely celebrate their accomplishments, a practice that not only enriches your personal achievements but also amplifies the success at the level of the organization as a cohesive entity. In addition, your conscientiousness extends to the broader professional community. Envisioning an ecosystem of well-being and interactivity, guided by a diverse assembly of adept individuals spanning various age groups, is pivotal. This dynamic fosters an environment conducive to growth, where positive collaborations flourish, and where the extensive guidance and support you offer yield mutually advantageous outcomes.

In leadership, you must abide by the principle of overseeing people, not solely their recent missteps. Your perspective should extend beyond magnifying their errors and treating them as the beginning and end of everything. Strive for clarity and avoid leaving matters susceptible to speculation. Set definitive expectations from the team, articulating them lucidly. Set a defined timeframe and establish roles, ensuring a harmonious fit between individuals and their entrusted responsibilities. Alert the team that you will promptly communicate the outcomes of their efforts, employing an assessment process founded on discerning criteria. Acknowledge exceptional performance with precise commendation, and address shortcomings by identifying their specific origin, while emphasizing each individual's prior successes and outlining anticipated improvements. Forge a path of guidance and assistance, fostering a culture of encouragement, attentive listening, and mutual respect among all members. However, know that leadership does not entail ownership?

Leadership does not mean ownership.

Leadership goes beyond possessing comprehensive knowledge, unwavering opinions, and solutions for every scenario. It doesn't entail assuming the workload for everyone or providing constant assistance under any circumstance. Instead, it involves empowering others to take ownership of their tasks and resolve challenges independently. Avoid sacrificing your time, aspirations, and life for others, as this won't necessarily foster successful leadership. Contrary to the notion that such actions might diminish employees’ respect and affection towards you, guiding, and overseeing significant projects, attentively listening to concerns, and offering selective assistance are the ultimate acts of goodwill. By entrusting your team members and affording them opportunities to excel autonomously, you aid their personal growth and accomplishments. Even in collaborative endeavors, value diverse perspectives, engage others in shared responsibilities, and allocate tasks according to strengths. It is even worthy to delegate tasks you're less adept at to others. This well-rounded leadership approach is echoed by Casey Stengel, a baseball manager, who remarked, "Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story." This sentiment speaks to the reality of facing trials and navigating the complex dynamics of team members with varied dispositions and conflicting tendencies.

Leadership is a combination of skill, artistry, and an essential requirement. While some individuals may possess innate leadership qualities, this isn't universally true. Therefore, anyone aspiring to achieve success in both professional and societal realms should actively cultivate and refine their leadership abilities and master this art in order to drive their team to success or to engage with the team leader and the members in a professional manner. Your position doesn't dictate the relevance of this pursuit; what truly matters is the actionable steps you take to enhance your leadership capacity.
