Startup Series: 6 tips to deliver a successful pitch

What is pitching and why it is essential for your startup
Learn about the importance of pitching and how to deliver a successful pitch to your potential investors or customers

Pitching your startup is an essential part of getting it off the ground. You need to be able to tell your story in a way that will make people want to invest in your idea and buy from you. It's not always easy finding the right words or coming up with the perfect story for a pitch, but there are some great techniques that can help you stand out from other startups.

What exactly is a pitch?

A pitch is a short presentation to a potential customer, investor, or partner. It’s an opportunity to show off your product or service and tell them why you are the best choice. When it comes to pitching an idea, there are many different types that are used by startups. Each type of pitch is designed to get the attention of investors in a unique way. One type is the elevator pitch, which typically lasts 10 seconds or less and can be delivered while riding an elevator. Another type of pitch is the three-minute power pitch, which usually takes about three minutes to deliver and often ends with a cliffhanger which creates excitement for the audience and leaves them wanting more.

How to deliver a winning startup pitch

There are many elements that go into making a successful startup pitch. The entire team should be aware of the content and the target audience and it's best to have the right timing and right message that will resonate with your audience. Here are six actionable tips that will help you to improve your startup pitching skills and increase your chances of success:

1. Make sure you have a great story to tell

A good startup pitch has to be based on a great story, which is why it’s important to know what your company stands for and what makes it unique. A well-prepared startup pitch needs to be well-researched and should have a clear narrative that will make it easy for the audience to connect with your story. The more you know about who you are pitching to, the more interesting and relevant your pitch will be.

2. Create an emotional connection

The most powerful pitches are those that create an emotional connection with the audience. They should make them feel like they want to do something about the problem you’re solving and not just listen passively. The first step is to identify the problem that your startup solves and what the audience cares about. Then, think about how you can present the solution in a way that will be most appealing to your target audience.

3. Demonstrate the benefits

It’s important for potential customers to understand how your product or service will improve their lives, which is why it’s important for you as a founder to be able to articulate this in a clear way. Use visuals, video, slideshows, or other forms of media to help you communicate your idea or show off a product demo more effectively - this is especially important if you're pitching an app or software-based company.

4. Be confident and prepared

When preparing to present a startup pitch, it's important to know what you're going to say and how you're going to say it. A good way to organize your thoughts is by using a storyboard. This technique consists of drawing images and writing sentences on index cards for the main points of your presentation. You can then arrange the cards in order on a table or flip chart as you speak them out.

5. Keep your pitch short and to the point

When you're trying to convince someone to help you, your pitch can't get lost in details that are irrelevant to your business or idea. Be concise and compelling. Your pitch should be no more than three minutes long and should cover the who, what, where, why and how.

6. Have a strong closing

Make it clear what you want from the audience at the end of your pitch - whether it's funding, feedback, or advice, be sure there is a call-to-action at the end of your pitch so that there's no confusion as to what you want them to do next.

Whether you are planning to pitch at the Entrepreneurship World Cup or starting your entrepreneurial journey in Misk Accelerator, remember that the most important thing for anyone pitching their idea is being authentic and honest about who they are and what they have done so far. This will show that you have confidence in yourself and what you're doing, which will make people more likely to invest or buy from you.
